VTS: A Tool for Building Visual Literacy, Language Skills, and Critical Thinking

In this video, art educator Philip Yenawine demonstrates the Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). A learner-centered instructional method used to examine and find meaning in visual art, VTS was created by Yenawine and developmental psychologist Abigail Housen and is intended to develop thinking, communication skills, and visual literacy.

The video documents Yenawine facilitating a VTS discussion about a painting in the Terra Foundation for American Art collection, Gallery of the Louvre by Samuel F.B. Morse, followed by an examination of how the discussion was constructed. Classroom and museum educators and docents interested in learner-centered teaching methods may find this video a useful resource.
