Exhibition: American Adversaries: West and Copley in a Transatlantic World

The Terra Foundation-supported exhibition American Adversaries: West and Copley in a Transatlantic World explores the subject of modern history painting through the work of  Benjamin West (1738–1820) and John Singleton Copley (1738–1815). West’s The Death of General Wolfe (1770) and Copley’s Watson and the Shark (1778) are shown together here for the first time in over sixty years. The exhibition will explore West’s progress as an academic artist first at the margins of the British Empire and then in the center of the English-speaking art world, and examine how West and Copley conveyed their understanding of colonial culture through theatrical paintings.
