Symposium: “Broken Images: A Symposium on Early American Photography in the Asia Pacific, 1850–1950”

As the United States began to expand into the Asia Pacific in the mid-19th century, American artists trekked across the region to photograph the newly acquired land. The resulting images were distributed in the United States through exhibitions, albums, stereograph series, magazines, and postcards, shaping American perceptions of the Asia Pacific. Organized by the Griffith Centre for Cultural Research, this Terra Foundation-supported symposium will address the implications of these largely-forgotten photographs.
