Colloquium: “The American West: Tracing the Genesis of a Myth”

This international colloquium is presented in conjunction with two major exhibitions devoted to nineteenth-century representations of the American West and of Native Americans: La Mythologie de l’Ouest dans l’Art Américain, 1830–1940 at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen and Images of the West: Survey Photography in French Collections, 1860–1880 at the Musée d’Art Américain Giverny. Specialists in art, literature, and cinema explore the genealogy of exhibition images by looking at stereotypes of the American Indian, the cowboy, and the western landscape that developed in the antebellum period and how such stereotypes were manifested in different artistic mediums. This event is organized by the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen.
