Colloquium: “The Independence of American Art”

Presented in conjunction with the exhibition American Beauty: Paintings from the Detroit Institute of Arts, 1770–1920 at the Musée d’Art Américain Giverny, this colloquium examines the claims for an independent identity at key moments in the history of American art, drawing attention to the critical assessment of these claims in the current context of globalization and multiculturalism. Colloquium speakers discuss the particular place of the United States in the artistic field from the eighteenth century to the contemporary period. Symposium papers are published: L’Art Américain: Identités d’une Nation (Terra Foundation for American Art/ENSBA/Musée du Louvre, 2005).
