Exhibition: Man Ray—Human Equations: A Journey from Mathematics to Shakespeare

Internationally co-organized by the Phillips Collection and the Israel Museum, in Jerusalem, this Terra Foundation-supported exhibition will explore Man Ray’s (1890–1976) artistic journey from Paris in the 1930s, where he took photographs of unusual nineteenth-century mathematical models, to Hollywood in the 1940s, where he revisited those photographs to create his Shakespearean Equations paintings. Man Ray considered the paintings, which represent perplexing interpretations of Shakespeare plays, to be the culmination of a significant body of work that spans 15 years and several media. This exhibition will unite these paintings for the first time since their initial exhibition in 1948, alongside the original three-dimensional mathematical models and Man Ray’s photographs of them.

The exhibition is also being presented at the Phillips Collection (February 7–May 10, 2015) and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek (June 7–September 20, 2015).
