Exhibition/Terra Collection Initiative: American Encounters: The Simple Pleasures of Still Life

The final installment of the American Encounters series, this exhibition explores the rise of still-life painting in nineteenth-century America. American Encounters: The Simple Pleasures of Still Life, a Terra Collection Initiative co-organized by the musée du Louvre, the High Museum of Art, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Terra Foundation for American Art, features 10 artworks from the collections of the four partner institutions to illustrate how American painters such as Raphaelle Peale, Martin Johnson Heade, and William Michael Harnett adapted European models to their time and country, and thus contributed to the creation of a national voice.

Two works from the Terra Foundation collection are included in the exhibition:

This exhibition is also on view at the musée du Louvre (February 4—April 27, 2015) and the High Museum of Art, in Atlanta, (September 26, 2015–January 31, 2016).
