Symposium: “Arthur C. Danto and the Work of Art: from Object to Theory”

This Terra Foundation-supported symposium will examine the writings of Arthur C. Danto (1924–2013) on American art theory and practice from 1945 to 1965, as well as Danto’s ever-growing impact on current Chinese art scholarship and criticism. Danto made significant contributions to the field of philosophy and was already a well-known scholar when he turned his attention to the questions brought forward by the work of contemporary artists. Danto began to connect early transitional work by Marcel Duchamp and other early twentieth-century artists with the current that was sweeping away Abstract Expressionism for artwork that engaged popular culture and the new postwar economy.
