Symposium: “The Crossing/La traversée: Art in Haiti and the US (1915–1986)”

This symposium highlights the aesthetic and political connections between artists in Haiti and the United States, including the work of the Haitian diaspora in the US and work by artists from the US in Haiti. It takes as its timeframe 1915–1986, marking the beginning of the US occupation of Haiti (1915–1934) through the fall of the US-backed Jean-Claude Duvalier dictatorship. It takes place in conjunction with Restoring the Spirit: Celebrating Haitian Art, an exhibition of Haitian art from 1940 to the present, and consists of a keynote lecture by artist Edouard Duval-Carrié; presentations by eleven speakers; and the West Coast premiere of a new film on Haitian art, “In the Eye of the Spiral.”
