Lecture: “The Americanist Sixties” by Cécile Whiting

One of the most exciting developments in recent art history has been the growing engagement of 1960s era practices from Americanist art historical and art theoretical perspectives, which seek to situate works of art within current cultural currents that are broader than those previously permitted by modernist formalist methodologies or postmodernist theoretical authorities.

In this lecture, the third installment of the Terra Foundation Lectures in Americanist Postmodern, Cécile Whiting, Chancellor’s Professor of Art History at the University of California, Irvine, considers how and why Americanists have claimed the 1960s as a historical period of interest, and examines what an Americanist perspective on artistic practices of that decade has to offer.
