As of spring 2013, the Terra Teacher Lab is no longer accepting applications for new participants. After eight years and over 175 graduates from Chicago Public Schools, the focus of this initiative is shifting towards providing continued professional development opportunities for program graduates. More resources and updates will be posted periodically.
For more information about the Teacher Lab, please contact Terra Foundation Program Officer and Teacher Lab Director Jennifer Siegenthaler (email@example.com, or 312-654-2253).
Between 2005 and the 2012-13 school year, the Terra Teacher Lab served the teachers of Chicago Public Schools through an annual, year-long professional-development program focused on the history of American art. The Teacher Lab fostered ways to promote critical thinking and enrich the social studies, language arts, and art curricula through the integration of American art in the curriculum. Offered in partnership with the DePaul Center for Urban Education and the Art Institute of Chicago, the Teacher Lab consisted of:
- An eight-day Summer Institute, during which participants received lessons in American art history from specialists and collaborated to develop in-depth lessons incorporating American art for the first semester of the school year.
- Five Saturday follow-up sessions during the school year in which teachers reported on their experiences with integrating American art into their instruction, examined student work growing from the program, and planned lessons for the second semester as well as a field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago.
- A culminating event at which teachers presented their projects to the larger education community.
