Terra Foundation-supported Events

Exhibition: James McNeil Whistler Retrospective

Organized by the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and the Yokohama Museum of Art, this Terra Foundation-supported exhibition will be the first retrospective of the work of James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) in Japan since 1987. Based primarily in London and Paris, Whistler was one of the most influential artists of the 19th century. Rejecting the artistic traditions of the Victorian era, he produced what were perceived as “subjectless paintings,” drawing inspiration for many of these works from Japanese prints. This exhibition will give special attention to the influence of Japanese art on the development of his style.

The exhibition will also travel to the Yokohama Museum of Art (December 6, 2014March 1, 2015).
