With more than 100 LIFE Magazine covers to his credit, Philippe Halsman (1906–1979) was one of the 20th century’s most successful commercial photographers. Through assignments for magazines and personal collaborations with artists, Halsman achieved an impressive portrait gallery of well-known figures, such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy, and many others. This Terra Foundation-supported exhibition—the first survey of Halsman’s work from 1932, when he began working, to the 1960s—presenst the full span of subjects and approaches he explored throughout his career, featuring unpublished documents, such as contact sheets, contact prints, original photomontages and mock-ups, and book dummies. To complement the exhibition, the Musée de l’Elysée will host a series of scholarly lectures and round tables.
