Exhibition: Surrealism and the Object

Featuring about 100 sculptures and 40 photographs, this exhibition spans the whole history of the surrealist movement, from its foundation in the 1920s to its recognition in New York during World War II, all viewed from an original angle: that of its relationship to the object.

Surrealism and the object, co-organized with the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC, highlights the different surrealist themes, including the articulation of individual awareness with society and the rejection of Western ethnocentrism, which manifest themselves as a strong interest in the arts of Africa, the Americas, and Oceania.
