To support Ofelia Esparza: A Retrospective, an exhibition that celebrates the artistic and cultural contributions of the artist (b. 1932) and altarista. While Esparza’s altar-making practice is widely known and celebrated, her longstanding fine arts practice, which incorporates drawing, painting, and printmaking, remains understudied and under-exhibited. A scholarly publication will elucidate the major themes and interests of Esparza’s practice, situating her work within the contexts of American art history, Chicana/o and Latinx studies, and folk and vernacular art traditions.
