Conservation Notes: A New Look: Samuel F. B. Morse’s “Gallery of the Louvre”

In 2010 the Terra Foundation’s monumental painting Gallery of the Louvre (1831–33), by Samuel F. B. Morse, underwent an extensive conservation treatment in the studio of Lance Mayer and Gay Myers, specialists in nineteenth-century American painting. The conservation of the painting is documented in the 30-minute video  A New Look: Samuel F. B. Morse’s “Gallery of the Louvre.” Produced by Sandpail Productions, the video features interviews with conservators, curators, and other specialists who discuss Morse’s career, the painting’s creation, and the Old Master works that were its sources. Excerpts from the video can be viewed to the right; the full video is available for purchase at Barnes & Noble. Look more closely at the painting here.
