Program Officer, Convening Grants and Initiatives (Paris, France)


The Terra Foundation for American Art is searching for a Program Officer to lead its Convening Grants and Initiatives Program, including its work in Giverny, France, and provide thought-leadership and support for other program areas.

The Program Officer will contribute to the foundation’s overall goals toward advancing its mission. At the core of this mission is a commitment to work in partnership with organizations and individuals locally and globally to foster intercultural dialogues and encourage transformative practices to expand narratives of American art.

The Program Officer will work closely with our Paris Director as well as with executive leadership and staff in the areas of Exhibitions, Collections, Strategic Initiatives, Grants Management, and Communications. Core responsibilities of the position include planning, facilitating, and leading the Convenings Grants and Initiatives Program; programming of events and convenings, notably in Giverny; participating in strategic planning; and helping to realize the foundation’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Are Paris-based or willing to relocate to the Paris area.
  • Possess a valid permit for employment in France.

What will the Program Officer do?

The Program Officer is responsible for ideating, managing, facilitating, evaluating, and communicating the foundation’s work in the Convenings Grants and Initiatives area, including but not limited to Giverny convenings. The position also ideates for and supports the foundation’s global strategy and strategic planning framework; identifies ways to strengthen and grow the Foundation’s global reach; and provide support for special initiatives.

The position uses strong thought leadership, project management, facilitation skills to:

  • Oversee, plan, and facilitate the Convenings Grants and Initiatives program, including managing the two-yearly grant cycles and off cycle projects, conducting analyses on key output and outcomes metrics, and, at key milestones, developing written and visual presentation materials.
  • Ideate, plan and/or help execute internal and external convenings as part of Giverny strategy.
  • Supervise and work closely with program staff, by providing effective leadership, creating a sense of common purpose and direction, to plan and implement the programs.
  • Manage and cultivate a global network of institutional partners in the field.
  • Support grantees through the grant application process.
  • Work with the Paris Director to plan, deliver, assess, and communicate progress across all aspects of Convenings Grants and Initiatives.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner for Paris Director and executive management on global strategy and strategic planning.
  • Conduct site visits to observe grantee programs/projects for outreach and evaluative purposes.
  • Conduct research, evaluate, and provide information to the Paris Director and executive management on a range of strategic and operational matters across the organization.
  • In coordination with Grant Management staff, track and drive Convenings Grants and Initiatives progress against organization pillars/priorities, providing relevant updates to appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
  • In coordination with Communications staff, plan internal and external communications strategies and create content in alignment with Convenings Programs and Initiatives goals.
  • Organize, lead and/or support internal working groups or cross-functional teams as required.
  • Implement and/or manage additional priority initiative projects and other duties as necessary.

What is the term, time commitment, and compensation?

The position is based in Paris, France, and reports to the Director of the Paris office. The position will be a full-time (35 hours a week) role with a gross salary range of 64.000 € – 70.000€ commensurate with experience. The Terra Foundation is currently operating on a hybrid in-office/remote work model. Travel and flexibility to work occasionally in the evenings and sometimes weekends as necessary are required.
