Paris, France (French translation below)—Today, it was announced that Diego Candil has been selected as the new director of the Terra Foundation Paris Center & Library, located in the 19th-century hotel Lévis-Mirepoix on rue de Lille. Candil, who has served as the secrétaire general (general administrator) of the Centre Pompidou-Metz since 2014, will begin his new role on March 5.
From 2001–08, Candil was the administrative head of the Musée d’Art Américain Giverny, then operated by the Terra Foundation. When the museum transferred to the French government in a public-private partnership in 2008 and became the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny, Candil was appointed director of the museum, a post he held until he departed for Metz.

Prior to his previous involvement with the Terra Foundation, Candil was the co-creator and CFO of the art fair Paris Photo (1997–2001) and a co-founder of Artist Book International (1994–97), a non-profit association that organized artist book fairs in Paris, Cologne, and New York. In 1998 he earned an MBA in human resources management from the Institut de Gestion Sociale, in Paris.

In 2009 the Terra Foundation opened the Paris Center & Library, a unique resource dedicated to serving international scholars and curators in the field of American art, as well as the interested public. The center provides a regular forum on art of the United States—the only one of its kind in Europe—through a wide variety of lectures, workshops, and symposia. Since the center’s opening, hundreds of scholars have participated in events there. The center also supports, creates, and disseminates new research on American art through institutional partnerships, academic programs, and exhibitions, as well as residential programs in Giverny, France.
The center is also home to the Terra Foundation Library of American Art, Europe’s only research library devoted exclusively to the visual arts of the United States. Specializing in the art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the library contains more than 10,000 English-language titles on painting, sculpture, and graphic arts, as well as photography and decorative arts, all of which are listed in its online catalogue. A joint partnership with the Fondation Custodia gives access to a shared reading room and combined holdings of approximately 150,000 volumes on Western art history.
The grant programs of the Terra Foundation offer support for exhibitions of American art and academic programs worldwide. Additionally, the foundation supports public and school programs in Chicago. Since 2005 the foundation has provided more than $95 million for nearly 1,000 exhibitions and scholarly programs in more than 30 countries, including Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Russia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
