Between 2001 and 2020, the Terra Summer Residency brought together ten scholars of American Art and artists worldwide for a program that offered time and space for independent work, seminars, and mentoring by established art historians and artists to foster reflection and debate.

Located in the foundation’s houses in Giverny, France (about one hour from Paris), the nine-week residency aimed to provide participants with an opportunity to listen and learn from each other, to compare cross-cultural and interdisciplinary perspectives, and to form professional networks and collaborations. In addition to a stipend, fellows received on-site lodging, use of working facilities, lunches, and weekly round-trip train tickets to Paris.

Over the course of 20 summers, the residency program brought together more than 400 scholars of American Art and artists from around the world.
